So today at work I was having a lovely conversation with a customer until I somehow mentioned I have trouble waking up. She then got really condescending and said “Well you are part of the lazy generation after all.” I told her I was tired because I’m still in high school and working and she got…

I was told I had a bad work attitude by a customer when I said I wish I was at the beach on a hot sunny day. ‘Anyway, you’d probably just get sunburn’ she said, wearing a sun dress and heading outside for the day.

I have an honours degree from a good university and work in a cafe making coffee for people who can afford not to work. I get spoken to like I am an idiot all day long and people assume I’m not capable of doing anything ‘better’.
Even though I work 40 hours a week I can’t afford to move out of home and support myself financially. I am 25 years old and graduated university in 2010, minimum wage us all I have been able to earn since.

We aren’t lazy, we are not incapable of bettering ourselves but we are restricted by limitations imposed on us by a society that allows those who already have everything to keep it to themselves and those who have nothing to stay that way.

I can’t begin to imagine how many other young people are in the same situation as me all over the world, and to think about it too long is depressing.
